OUTSTANDING RATES.

I was much concerned regarding suggestions made by Mr. J. K. Johnston for collecting outstanding rates. Mr. Johnston should remember that when elected to the Mount Eden Council he took upon himself £he position of one of tile custodians of all the people of the borough; his duty is, then, to every section, not to the fortunate few. It would be well, therefore, if Mr, Johnston would make himself conversant with the conditions under which these men are working in an endeavour to try and save their home?. Just let him go down into the shaft in Carmen Avenue for o:.iy half an hour, or into the tunnel in Tennyson Street that is being cut through blue- metal, or sit with a drill or hammer in his hand in the open trenches these cold mornings, with a pair of threadbare trousers on and very little underneath; then, and only then, will he realise what the men arc doing to save their homes by working one day a week as payment oil' rates (which have had the 10 per cent penalty imposed). I would appeal to the council to consider very carefully every step they take regarding Mr. Johnston's suggestion, that of realising on properties of those who are striving to their utmost to pay off their arrears of rates. On behalf of upwards of two hundred ratepayers of Mount Eden. RATEPAYER.
