The features of the series of English county cricket matches, which commenced on Wednesday, were:— Tlio performance of 11. H. Townsend's 14 wickcts for Derbyshire, against Gloucestershire, after his selection as twelfth man (all-rounder) for England in the Test against West Indies at Lord's to-morrow. A Welsh victory over Lancashire. Detailed results: — Middlesex: First innings. 204. Worcester: First innings, 2!)!) (Nichol 112). Worcester won on the first innings. Kent: First innings, 120 (Smith five for 38); second, 110 (Nichols seven for 52). Essex: First innings, 203 (Freeman five for 73) ; second, two for 37. Essex won by eight wickets.

Derbyshire: First innings, 200 (God-d-ard live for 49); second, 123 (Goddard six for 52). Gloucestershire: First innings, 200 (Townsend six for 04) ; second, 112 (Townsend for 26). Derbyshire won by 71 runs. Yorkshire: First innings, 229 (Sutcliffo 7i). Warwick: First innings, 03 (Verity four for 18, Macnulav four for 3(5); follow-on, 101 (Verity live for 2.3, Macaulay five for 33). Yorkshire won by an innings and 0.3 runs. Somerset: First innings, 190; second, 272. Hampshire: First innings, 93 (Wellard seven for 43); second, 202 (Creese 90). Somerset won by 107 runs.
