HOCKEY CARNIVAL.

COUNTRY WEEK TOURNEY. RODNEY DEFEATS PAEROA. COLLEGIATE AND WHANGAREI TIE. The 6tory of the final day of section play in the Country Week hockey tournament is soon told. Waipa had clinched the men's championship on Thursday, so that yesterday's games lacked interest. Appearances pointed to Auckland A and Paeroa being the section winners in the ladies' competition, but Rodney created the surprise of the carnival by lowering Paeroa's colours—thereby causing a section tie, which necessitated a replay between Rodney and Paeroa this morning. Their managers cannot be complimented on the decision to postpone the play off, because as the match was on early yesterday extra time could have been arranged until one side or the other had scored a goal, or another full match staged. The decision not to play until this morning meant a big concession to the champions, Auckland A, who will be taking things quietly till afternoon, while they await for the very tired opposition coming up to them for the final.

So far as Rodney's victory is concerned it need only be stated that, trained by the members of the men's side from that district, and benefiting by the instruction, the northern girls could do nothing wrong; and the Paeroas did nothing right. This is, of coursr, subject to tlie axiom that a team plays just so well as permitted by the opposition, which, in this instance, gave their adversaries no possible chance of winning. To Evelyn Gubb must go the credit for the lion's share in Rodney's triumph. Apart from her two goals, she gave the best display, at inside left, of the whole tournament. While it would seem invidious to particularise other players where all shaped so splendidly, a word can be said of the magnificent all-round game played by Eileen Dunning, at left half. Hardly a player in tlie Paeroa team rose to the occasion, and it is doubtful if captain V. Shand, at centre, has ever appeared to less advantage.

Whangarei A was anxious to beat Collegiate, runners-up to Auckland at the 1932 carnival, but the young eleven refused to acknowledge the defeat that seemed imminent at the interval. Although only one goal down, Whangarei were maintaining a hot pace. The Collegians, however, gave easily their best display of tlie tourney in the opening twenty minutes of the second spell, showing an aggressiveness lacking in their earlier engagements. After equalising the scores Whangarei were pressing strongly when a "penalty bully" was awarded in the circle, ancl time called before it was taken. Rona Munro, at inside right for Collegiate, was the outstanding figure of the match, and Beth Gunn, at left half, quite the most energetic toiler. That Whangarei's defence was so sound is due to the fine work of Lily Bint (goal), Kathleen Birch and captain Olga Abbott (full-backs). The flying wingers E. Simons and M. Carnac were always alert, but had to make most of their own opportunities, as the passing was not up to Whangarei's usual standard of combination.

The only noteworthy feature about the Auckland-Northern Wairoa fixture was tlie performance of M. Waters in again scoring half the goals recorded by her team. Altogether, this dashing forward shot half a dozen of the fifteen goals Auckland A rang on in their four matches.

It is not proposed to 6ay anything about the men's games in the circumstances, except that Norman Challenger, ill letting Piako in with two early goals, caused Whangarei some concern (Piako led 2—l at half-time) before the southerns, playing their first match at the carnival, submitted to defeat in the special encounter. This was for the cup presented by the president of the Auckland Hockey Association (men's), Mr. L. C. Kent, for annual competition between those two districts.

To say that the tournament was a success 111 every way is but to put it mildly. The weather was on its best behaviour, with the exception of Wednesday's drizzle, the hockey was nearly always of a high standard, and the admin istration really excellent. Mr. Geo. Peace, secretary, looked after the men's interests well; Mr. Harry Watts had charge of the refereeing arrangements, while Alma Twinamc (executive officer of the

I Ladies' Association) was, as ever, a model of accuracy, kindness, courtesy and consideration in carrying out her manifold duties, aided by a band of loyal and efficient workers. The secretary desires to place on record special thanks to Mrs. L. R. Rivers, Miss I. Nealis and Miss P. Camplin. Referees who officiated during the week were: —Miss C.
