RUGBY FOOTBALL.

REFEREES' ASSOCIATION

There was a bumper attendance of nearly 60 members at last night's meeting of the Auckland .Rugby Referees' Association, over which Mr. j. G. C. presided. Dr. L. H. Briggs and Mr. G. Pepper were cleeted members, subject to them passing the required examination. Mr. Frank Sutherland, a past president and the present Auckland representative solo selector, lectured on the relationship between referee and player. After dealing with the need of uniformity in rulings and many other aspects of control to the game, Mr. Sutherland touched upon a matter which is greatly exercising the minds of many patrons of the game. Week after week there are interminable stoppages for minor injuries, which should most certainly be dealt with by the ambulance staff 011 the sideline without holding tip play. (In one big game at Men larjs recently several minutes were lost "while a player actually .standing on his feet 1 few yards infield, with a damaged eye, was assisted.) And there have even been instances of adjournments of play tor attention to bootlaces. ~, Mr. Sutherland dealt trenchantly Wit.i this great annoyance to spectators. Oldtimers were constantly claiming that in their days there were no stoppages except for a real accident, but filthough theu memories were perhaps short, it was evident some rule is required to deal with the matter. Mr. Sutherland suggested th«u a motion be passed advising the executive of the Auckland Rugby Union tuot m future play would not -be stoppec. .tor minor injuries for any greater time t:i an was necessary for the ambulance stair to remove players to the sideline for treatThe subject is to be discussed further; also that of replacing gear without future interference with play.
