WANGANUI THEFT.

AUCKLAND MAN ARRESTED. TAXI-DRIVER CHARGED. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") WANGANUI, this clay. A sensational sequel to the theft of £Sl3 in silver from a taxi on June 4 was the arrest last evening of John Ralph Penny, aged 31, taxi-driver, of 125, Vincent Street, Auckland.

Penny wae arrested at Maxwell, about 15 miltb north of Wanganui, yesterday, and brought before the Police Court this morning oil a charge of theft. He was remanded for eight days.

The taxi, driven by Penny, with Mr. William Toonicy, of Parnell Road, Auckland, as a passenger, was ou its way to Wellington on June 4. When Wanganui was reached early in the evening, a halt was made for tea at the Royal Willows restaurant. The doors of the car were locked.

When Penny and Mr. Toonicy came out of the restaurant, the taxi had disappeared. Some time later it was discovered a mile away in Brassey Road, St. John's Hill. Three bags of silver had disappeared. In addition to the silver, it was stated that Mr. Toomey had in liis possession £000 in notes.

It is asserted that Penny's car was followed by another from Auckland. Ono was seen passing through Waverley a quarter of a mile behind the taxi.
