ARMY NURSING SISTERS.
A successful "gift" and "bring and buy" afternoon was* held by the Returned Army Nursing Sisters at the Evelyn Firth Home on Saturday afternoon, the proceeds of which, are to be used to help relieve distress, which at the present time is very severe, among the wives and families of many of the returned men. The guests numbered about three hundred. Beautiful weathSr and surroundings helped considerably to make- the afternoon an enjoyable one, while delightful music, played by the band from the Blind Institute, was one of the pleasing features of the afternoon. Afternoon tea was served in the dining room, which was decorated with' early Iceland poppies, and which, with the vividly coloured stalls arranged round the large balconies and ward, added to the general air of festival. The hostesses for the afternoon were Miss Bird, matron of the home, Miss Early, president, and Miss Martyn, secretary, of .the Returned Army Nursing Sisters' Association. The unified labour and enthusiasm of these ladies and of tiie other members of the committee of the assopiation, and of the staff of the Evelyn Firth Home, was in no small measure responsible for the very great success of the afternoon. Those in charge of the various stalls were:— Clothing and novelties, Mesdames Cooper and Coates and the Misses Campbell, Taylor, Rudd and Evans; cakes, Mesdames Cadoux, Latchmore, Mulcock and Miss Fitzgibbons; sweets, Mrs. Webster and the Misses Mirams and Mandeno; flowers and produce, Mesdames de .Jouney, Spencer, Warren,- and Mis 6 Baglev. Mr. Sherlock was in charge of the bran tub. Those responsible for afternoon tea were: Mesdames Hatfield and Clifford, and the Mioses Wright, Hood, Austen, Leigh, Brayshaw, Cunningham, and J. and M. Martyn. .The successful competitors for the competitions were: Mrs. Devereaux, winner of the doll; Mrs. Hook and Mr. Bryant, winners of the pictures; and Miss Sutherland, Mr. Robinson and Mr. Kirk, joint winners of the Red Cross cake. Two other cakes were won by Miss Kent and Mr. Morris.
