STRUCK POLE.
WOMAN KILLED ON TRAM.
LEANING. FROM PLATFORM.
Fatal injuries were received by Mrs. Yvonne Wheadon, aged about 28, of 213. Point Chevaliei; Road, when, standing on the step of a tram, she leaned out and struck her head against a centre pole. The accident happened on an in ward-bound tram in Pitt Street, about eight o'clock last evening. The injured woman was rushed to the hospital by the St. John Ambulance, but she died on admission there. i ■
When the tram was near St-. Helen's Hospital, Mrs. Wheadou left her seat and hurried through to the front platform. She leaned over the chain on the right-hand side and stood for a moment on the s.tep. She was immediately struck by the centre pole and hurled into 'the. roadway. The conductor notified the motor man, who • stopped the tram, and Mrs.. Wheadon was found on the road, suffering from serious head injuries.
Mr. Wlicadon left home for a camp in the country under a relief scheme only yesterday morning. There v arc two children in the family. An inquest will be opened this afternoon. 1 Inquest Adjourned. An inquest was opened for identified; tion purposes by the coroner, Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.. this afternoon. Tlibmas Chamberlain gave evidence that deceased had lived at his house at 213, Point Chevalier Road for the past six months. Her husband was a relief worker ih-the Waitakeres. She was 29 years of age.
