HONOUR FOR FIJI.
MR. HENRY MARKS KNIGHTED.
(Prom Our Own Correspondent.) SUVA, June 7. Residents of Fiji arc rejoicing that the Hon. Hcriry Marks, C.8.E., has been knighted. For many years hie name has been associated with the public life of the Colony and with the growth and development "of its capital —Suva. $orn in Melbourne in 1801, he came to Fiji as a young man in his twenties, and formed the firm of Henry Marks and Co., and later the business was amalgamated with that of Morris, Hcdstrom, Ltd. To-day lie is chairman of the combined company. He is also chairman of the Paciiie Insurance Company and Shirt Oglivie, Ltd., and director of other leading business concerns in Fiji. The honour came on the eve of the celebration of the golden wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Marks, for which many relatives have come from Australia. The. event is being celebrated with much rejoicing. Sir Henry has been Mayor of Suva for a number of years, and was for many years a member of both the Executive and Legislative Councils. During the war he gave £20,000 and later £10,000 towards the building of the War Memorial Hospital, and also gave it two sets of X-ray plants. Lady Marks is very popular with all classes, and .is well known for her kindly and charitable disposition. After the war Sir Henry received the order of C.8.E., and on retiring from the Executive Council was given the., right to use "The honourable" for life. j
