BATING BELIEF SOUGHT,

(By Tslegrapb.—Own Correspondent.) THAMES, this day. ' This week is a momentous one in the history of Thames, for upon the outcome of the conferencc between the ratepayers and their creditors rests the immediate future of tho town. Tomorrow Messrs. J. S. Sncll, chairman of the Thames Borough Loans Creditors' Association, and Mr. W. Nash, M.P. for Hutt, representing Harbour Board deben-ture-holders, will visit Thames and confer with the ratepayers on the matter of giving them some relief from the burden of rates. Tho heavy financial obligations and i"!to loss of the town's one-time most important industry is haying a serious detrimental cffect 011 business, preventing rehabilitation and bringing about a crisis. It is stated that among the many matters that will be placed before tho representatives of the borough's creditors will be the unified control and collection of rates by the suggested amalgamation of the Thames Borough and the Harbour Board, as the same ratepayers are levied for both rates, owing to the council having guaranteed the rate on the harbour loan. Another matter that will most likely be dis-cussed-is the maintenance of the town, and the urgent necessity of reviving the mining and engineering industries in this district. It is anticipated that the outcome oi the conference will afford some relief to the ratepayers of their present financial difficulties
