SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The St. Helier's branch of the League of Mothers had their monthly meeting on Monday, with a fairly large attendance of members and visitors from other leagues. Mrs. Michcll was the speaker for the afternoon. * * * • The Order of the Eastern Star held a successful dance on Saturday evening at Renall Street hall, Ponsonbv. The .evening was spent in modern, old-time and Scottish dancing, the latter being accompanied by the bagpipes, played by Pipers Ferguson and McComb. Refresh-j ments were served, and a very enjoyable evening was brought to a close with th;. singing of "Auld Lang Syne." » • »" • One of the most successful dances yet hold in tbe Mangere East Hall was that of tho Mangere Literary and Social Society, which held its first long night on Saturday. There was a good attendance of card players and dancers, who enjoyed tho several old-time tunes played during the evening. Bridge and 500 were provided for the non-dancers. Miss B. Solomon and Mr. K. Chapman won tho bridge, while Miss B. Key and Mr. A. Newson won the 500.

The Women's Progressive Club, Y.W.C.A., held their usual weekly meeting. Mrs. Robson. presided over a good attendance of members and friends. The speaker for the evening, Mrs. Bradstreet, lato president of the Y.W.C.A., gave a talk on "Lives and Work of Women of Other Nations," and also showed a sample of their, work in lace and cane work. Mrs. Robson proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the speaker, which was passed by acclamation. Mrs. Rawley read the report from the National Council of Women. Supper was then served, the hostesses being Mesdames Neele, Heywood and Sullivan.

The Northcote Co-operativo Social Club held a gathering in the parish hall on Saturday evening. The vocal items comprised quartets by the Northcote Returned Soldiers' combination, duets by Messrs. C. L. Duko and R. McGliie, and songs by Messrs. H. Cosnett, W. : Copeland, R. MeGhie and F. C. Swinbank. The accompaniments were played iby Mrs. W. Mayall. Among those present were: Mesdames C. L. Allcock. 1 : The title chosen was "A Night in tlio. Garden." The stage was a sylvan bower of growing flowers and palms, §et on a grass foundation, and thet tiny rows of coloured electric lights, with a moon, made it fairyland. Bouquets of chocolates were the favours distributed' to the women guests, and a buttonhole of a cigarette was for the sterner sex. Bird and flower hats were also made, and worn by all present. The programme of musical, vocal and elocutionary items were given by tho Clarion Four (Misses Beryl Smith, Lillian Wood, Messrs. Duncan Black.and Lambert Harvey), Misses Hinemoa Rosieur and Nonie Wright, Frank .Campbell, and a nymph dance' by Clare Searle. A large number of members and. visitors attended.

Mr. and Mrs. E. R.. Boucher were host and hostess' for a dance "giv(?n by the associate members of the.Auckland Aero Club at the clubhouse on .Saturday evening.
