MR. S. DALRYMPLE.

One who claimed to be the last survivor of the crew" of-the Taiaroa, which was wrecked north of Kaikoura 47 .years ago, with the loss of 33 lives, died on June S at Epsom.,: This was Mr. Samuel Dalrymple, former senior inspector of machinery in Auckland. Born in Monmouthshire, he was an indentured apprentice to a firm of engineere and boiler makers in Glasgow. Later he went to sea, and upon arrival in New Zealand, joined the Union S.S. Co., being. successively chief engineer of the Taiaroa, Mawhara, Taieri, Kotorua,' Wakatipu, Tckapo, Flora, Tc Anau, Liddlesdale, Kotomahana, Talune and Mararoa. Mr. Dalrymple passed the New Zealand Marino Board's examination in the Merchant Service, and subsequently the Board of Trade examination in England. He joined tho New Zealand Government Inspection of Machinery Department. In 1009 he succeeded the late Mr. W. Wetherilt, as. senior inspector of ehips, and examiner of engineers in Auckland. Fourteen years later, in 1923, Mr. Dalrymple retired. He is survived, by two daughters, Misses Kathleen and Marjorie Dalrymple.
