RUGBY FOOTBALL.
SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP.
GRAFTON MEETING UNIVERSITY.
TRAINING COLLEGE Y. PONSONBY,
With the senior Rugger championship so close —only one point separating five teams —anything may happen before the eagerly-anticipated meeting between Grammar Schools' Old Boys and University on June 17. The principal attraction to-mor-row is the 'Varsity-Grafton engagement. If the black and whites maintain the fine form they have shown all the year, and lower the colours of the light blues (who will have their five New Zealand 'Varsity representatives in the filing line), Saturday week's big game will not be quite so interesting. The curtain-raiser will see the improving Training College fifteen in action. They are tackling the championship leaders (Ponsonby), who may not have things all their own way against the teachers. In the third match at Eden Park the contestants will be Grammar Schools and Technical Old Boys. On the outside fields, College Rifles play Marist Old Boys at the Showgrounds, while Manukau journey out to Sturgess Park to tackle Otahuliu. The senior championship points are:— Ponsonby, 9; Grafton, University, Marist and Grammar, 8; Training College, Otahuhu and College Rifles, 5; Manukau and Technical, 2. Grafton has not figured in the "star" game at Eden Park for many years. Only last season the Magpies had to stave off a strong challenge from Parnell to retain their place in the A grade competition. One of the famous clubs of Auckland's earlier Rugger history, Grafton won the senior championship in 1880, 1888, 1895 and 1901. It was twenty years before the Graftonians "were victorious again, taking the honours in 1921 and being runners-up in 1923. No doubt that fine forward, Angus Finlayson, will get a splendid reception when he leads his men out to tackle University to-morrow. Teams selected: — GRAFTON.
