BAER WINS.
FIERCE BOUT.
SCHMELING SUCCUMBS TO T.K.O. IN TENTH ROUND.
OVER 60,000 SPECTATORS.
(Received 4.30 p.m.) NEW YORK; June 8. Max Baer, the Californfan heavyweight, on Thursday night here defeated the former world's champion boxer, Max Schmeling, of Germany, by a technical knock-out in the tenth round of a bout scheduled for 15' rounds. Displaying terrific punching power, Baer caught the former world champion with a barrage of rights to the chin, and in the ninth round the Teuton was" tottering groggily after the bell. Coming out savagely to finish the German in the tenth, Baer loosed a volicy of rights and floored Schmeling for a count of nine. The Teuton came up gamely, but was helpless, and Baer smashed him from one side of the ring to the other before the referee stopped the bout. Baer was 13Jlb heavier than his. opponent, but the betting was 3J to 1 in Schmeling's favour. Baer had a slight superiority throughout the bout, until he took a decidcd lead in the ninth. The attendance was estimated at over 60,000 spectators.
