CRAWFORD IN FORM.
Whirlwind Triumph Over Japanese Star. MEETS COCHET IN" FINAL. (Received 12 noon.) PARIS, June 4. In the semi-final of the French lawn tennis singles championship J. B. Crawford (Australia) defeated Jiro Satoli (Japan), o—o, o—o,0 —0, C—2; and H. Cochet (France) defeated H. G. N. Lee (Britain), 9 —ll, G—3, o—3, o—3.0 —3.
Critics agree that Crawford has never shown such wonderful form in Europe as he did in his whirlwind triumph over Satoh. He almost seemed to toy with the Japanese, and his accuracy was uncanny. He was in devastating mood from the outset, and simply ran away with a succession of points and games by his cannonball services and terrific drives, which Satoh found unplayable.
Lee, against Coc-het, began promisingly, taking the first long set, after Coclict had led 5—3, and had had five set points. This required an heroic effort by Lee, and ultimately led to his downfall, as lie was incapable of sustaining the great speed of the encounter. In the quarter-finals Satoli' had defeated Perry, I—o,1 —0, 7—5, 6—4, 3—o, 6 —2; and Lee had defeated Marcel Bernard, 10—8, C—i, 5 —7, G—o. In the semi-finals of the women's singles Mine. Mathieu (France) defeated Miss Helen Jacobs (U.S.A.); and Miss Scriven (England) defeated Miss Betty Nuthall (England), G —2, 4—G, G—3. In the quarter-finals Miss Nuthall beat Mrs. Andrus Burke (U.S.A.), 6—3, G —l; and Miss Jacobs defeated Mile. Goldsclnnidt (France), I—(i, G—l, 6—3.
There will be an all-Australian final in the men's consolation singles as McGrath beat A. Bernard (France), G—4, 9—7; and Turnbull beat Gandau (Monaco), o—2,0 —2, 6 —3.
