FOR SERVICES RENDERED.
There are features of special interest in the English section of the Birthday Honours. When Kitchener was hotly criticised in the English Press in the early part of the war, Mr. Asquith recommended him for the Order of the Garter to show the world that he enjoyed the confidence of the Government. The conferment of the Garter on the Earl of Lytton, as head of the League of Nations mission in Manchuria, will be taken abroad as an indication of the Government's approval of that body's report. Major-General Secly goes to the House of Lords after a long and very varied career in politics, war, and public life generally. As chairman of the National Savings Committee ho has directed the most remarkable thrift movement in the history of Britain. His motto has always been to "live dangerously"—"Fear and Be Slain" is the title of one of the books —and even the calm of the House of Lords will not quench that spirit Those connected with the "rapid .growth of the repertory or little theatre movement in New Zealand should pause to pay a tribute to Miss A. E. Horniman, who becomes a Companion of Honour for her services to' drama. Miss Horniman established, in Manchester, the first English repertory theatre, and she was one of the founders of the world-famous Abbey Theatre in Dublin. Last but not least there is Sir John Collings Squire, poet, parodist and critic, compiler of anthologies, and founder and editor of the "London Mercury." His services to literature have been both varied and distinguished, and one should not forget his persistent campaign for the preservation of the English countryside.
