FIERCE -WHIRLWIND.
SHOP VERANDAH LIFTED. DOMINION' ROAD INCIDENT. A verandah of a shop was lifted, sheets of rooting iron were hurled many yards away, and damage to fences and trees was done by a whirlwind which struck Dominion Road about 2 p.m. yesterday. One of the sheets of iron fell on the wires, and electric power was stopped for a time.
The verandah belonged to a stationery shop at the corner of Prospect Terrace and Dominion Road, owned by Mrs. W J. Goodall. Most of the wreckage was left on the pavement in front of the shop, but stray sheets of iron were tossed into the air like pieces of paper. One piece was carried '50yds along Prospect Terrace, until its progress was arrested by a telegraph, post. Another piece was lifted high into the air and dropped in a garden, three houses away. Fortunately the of the whirlwind was confined to a small area, and it lasted only a, few minutes.
