WINTER BOWLING.

SATURDAY'S TOURNAMENTS. CELEBRATING KING'S BIRTHDAY. HINTS FOR NEXT JANUARY. (By TRUNDLER.) The weather cleared up just a few hours too late to assure the success; of the numerous tournaments planned for King's Birthday, play being virtually impossible until nearly 11 o'clock. This was most unfortunate, for a record numlier of players would probably have been competing. For tlie sis tournaments definitely closed down in advance no less than 146 rinks had entered, and with reasonably tine weather there would have been the equivalent of 30 to 40 rinks at Otahuhu, 'le Papapa and Epsom, where post entries were being taken. The lower estimate, a total of 176 rinks, recalls the record entry for a. • centre tournament, 152 rinks last Easter,* as compared with 14$ rinks for the last Dominion tournament in Auckland, and the record entry of 170 rinks four years earlier. Of course the King's Birthday and the Easter "tournaments were • conducted during statutory holidays, but against this must be set the fact that the Dominion tournament is open to competitors from all over New Zealand." "The figures raise the question mentioned in. this column in the Sports. Edition last Saturday, as to whether a bolder and more liberal policy would make the Dominion tournaments accessible to a much greater number of competitors than in the past, and the replies from the chair last week, at the meeting of delegates,, hinted that the Auckland "members of the council favour a policy that would not virtually reserve these splendid tournaments to men of means and leisure. !

The policy for Dunedin next January will be decided at the annual "meeting of the council on July 5, and the success of the tournament in Auckland a year later will largely depend on the liberality of the measures adopted as an experiment foV Dunedin. Three distinct^policy measures have been reviewed, mailing every competitor eligible for the Test; matches against Australia, lowering the eutry fees,, and removing the difficulty found by email clubs in making up a rink, under the present conditions. However, these do not by any means exhaust 'the possibilities for popularising these tournanients by studying the convenience of the competitors and making it known that this is being done. At Wellington last January was tried for the first time the suggestion repeatedly urged, that 10.30 was enough to start the four rounds in the singles on the first Monday, for the convenience of those who travel long distances by rail or motor on that morning, and that there was no necessity to start the section games in the rinks.as early as !> o'clock. While primarily for the benefit of visitors, both of these alterations Miited a good many local business people, even df only to go through the morning's correspondence. Another alteration which i-! probably of still more value is to revert to the order of play that was first adopted for Dunedin in 1926, viz., singles, rinks, pairs, so that players "with, very limited leisure could play in the rinks without breaking into two weeks, as they have to do at present. After prolonged consultations one rink for the Suva tournament has been definitely made up, and will comprise /Messrs. A. J. Pople and C. H. Skinner (Onehunga) and W. Williams and G. V. Westbrooke (Ellerslie). However, this does not exhaust the list of those who want to go, rnd. any others will need to make their decision early, a's the mail closing next "Saturday morning will have to take the entries to Fiji. The first match for the Reason for the Jordan Pins will ,be played ~ next Saturday ou the Te Papapa green. The holders are T. Sissons, T. G. Harriman, A. Moon, S. Moore (Te Papapa), and the challengers H. Percy, X). Drake, A. Jackson, S. W. Thompson (Hillsboro'.). They will be followed by H. Hay (Ellerslie), J. Gardiner (Otahuliu) and 11. Dawson (St. Helier's). ~ After the break for the King s Birthday, the other inter-club challenge matches, for the Edwin Stars and the Denison Pins, will be resumed next Saturday at Devonport and West End respectively. * The Nomads will play- their second match of the season next Saturday, against Eawhiti. As the accommodation is limited on this occasion to five rinks, it would be well for intending competitors to ascertain whether they are on the list or not., and if they are, to keep their appointment. It is hard to say which give more inconvenience to those who are making up the rinks for a punctual start, tiie players "who stay away without telephoning to that effect, or the players who turn up at the last minute without advising, and at every function of this nature in recent years an early start has been made impossible by one or both of these factors. For the following tour of the Nomads on June 24, there will be no limit to the number who can be accommodated. The Rocky Nook greens are now closed clown for a,few months for top-dressing. On the last occasion that a few rinks were jolled, Bowen and Keatley won the pairs championship of the club and Rutledge won the junior championship."
