OTAHUHU COUNCIL.
The Otahuhu Borough Council met last, evening, the Mayor, Mr. H. T. Clements, presiding. 'Hospital Levy. — The council were notified that the hospital levy for the ensuing year would be £1329, or £19 more than last year. Local Bodies' Association.—A request from the Local Bodies' Association that the council reconsider their decision, not to join was declined. The Mayor said the association, so far as Otahuhu was concerned, was a "complete wash-out." Bern its got talked out, as the association was controlled by the city. Subsidies.—The fire brigade's annual subsidy of £30 was granted. The public library was given a subsidy of £5. The subsidies to the public school and the Convent school were temporarily withdrawn. Collector. — Mr. W. W. Beck was appointed collector to endeavour, by personal canvass, to get in outstanding rates and accounts, and he 'is to be paid 5 per cent on any amount collected. Boot Repairing Depot.—At the request of the relief workers it was decided to open a hoot repairing depot by using part of the council shed in Fairburn Road. The Mayor said the charges for repairs would be the net cost. It was the intention to repair the boots of all mem-, bers of a relief workers' family. Playing Areas.—The parks committee reported that they had granted the use of Sturgess Park to the Rugby Club, which had five teams, on five Saturdays, and the League Club, three teams, <jn three Saturdays, and would allocate the remaining Saturdays when they knew how many teams were playing at the end of that period. Manukau Firo Prevention Subsidy.—A recommendation from the fire brigade committee that the fire subsidy from the Manukau County Council he increased from £40 to £50, caused some discussion, and was finally altered to £75. . Supply of Meat.—A communication was received from the Government re a supply of cheap meat to relief ■ workers. The Mayor explained that the Social Service Association had a meat scheme in operation. It was decided to submit the Government offer to the next meeting of the Citizens' Welfare League. Economy and Reorganisation.—On the ■motion of Mr. A. Sinclair, the council's committees are to bring down .proposals for economy and reorganisation, together with a scheme for the allocation of the extra jobs for relief workers over a greater number of workers. "Westfield Quarry.—The works committee reported on the leasing of the municipal quarry at Westfield. It recommended that arrangements be imade immediately to suspend crushing and quarrying operations .by the council's own staff; that two of the three permanent men 'be dismissed, and the foreman transferred to the horough maintenance staff; that the quarry ibe advertised tor lease for 12 months, either on a royalty .basis or a weekly rental. The report was adopted.
