'VARSITY RUGBY.

ANOTHER EASY N.Z. WIN.

RUFF KICKS SEVERAL GOALS. WEAK AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Sunday., The New Zealand . University team defeated the touring team from the Australian Universities by 25 points to 0 at Carisbrook yesterday. The packs were fairly evenly matched, but the defence of me Australian backs was poor, and fookes and Caughey repeatedly found openings to send Cttley and Dunne away ou the wings. The score, however, was not a fair indication of the merits of the teams, aa the Australians several times just failed to finish off good movements when within a few yards of the iN'ew Zealand line.

The Australian forwards were superior in the line-outs, but the heavier New Zealand pack more than held its own in the tight. Andrews (South Island wingforward in 1931) "was the outstanding "forward and played a tireless game in the final quarter of an hour, when he was definitely on top. The visitors' side-row men broke very quickly from the scrums and practically smothered Rae during the greater part of the day. Ruff played a splendid'game at full-back, and, in addition to gaining big stretches of ground with his kicking to touch, he converted several tries from extremely difficult angles.

The tackling of the visitors was poor and they* took far too many risks in opening up, the game. A sensational movement followed the kick-off. A forward threw the ball back to Rae, who sent the backs a.way with a rush, and Caughey piit in a strong run down tlfe' sideline, but he was pulled down when *lose to the Australian line. For the next half-hour play, although hard, was rather uninteresting, Australia having slightly the better of the game and Rae being smothered at the base of the scrum by the fast-brdaking Australian forwards. The first' score came late in the spell, Andrews breaking into an Australian passing rush near half-way: \ The visiting backs were caught all out of position and the Canterbury forward ran fully 40 yards to score well out. The attempt to convert was a failure. A few minutes later Rac kicked a penalty goal from an easy position. ' From the kick-off Hamilton fielded the ball and threw a long pass to Rae. The whole New. Zealand back line joined up in a beautiful passing movement which took plav from one end of the field to the other, A forward pass caused the attack to'break down,' but from the resulting scrum Rao whipped the ball.out, on the blind side to Mulvihill, who sent on to Uttley, the last-named diving across at the corner for a try which Ruff converted. At half-time the score was: > New Zealand 11 Australia • u The early portion of the second spell was colourless and certainly not up to university Test standard. Ruff kicked a goal from a pe/ialty 35 yards out, and for the next quarter of an hour the Australians were doing most of the attacking, but the defence of the Xew Zealand backs was very solid. New Zealand's attempts at passing, however, were quickly broken up by the Australian backs, who were getting to their opponents very quickly. At length Fookes managed to break through, and ho sent Dunne away down the wing. Dunne outpaced Rowe to score and Hull converted. , The New Zealand forwards now began to get the upper hand and. following a forward rush, Mulvihill secured and broke through to the Australian line, where lie threw the ball out to Service, who raced across. TheJiick at goal missed. In the final two minutes of the game Edwards went straight through the opposition to within 15 yards of the line and passed to Uttley, who dashed across wide out. ine kick failed and the game ended: ■ New Zealand 25 Australia •.- ' »
