QUEEN VICTORIA.
Protest at Removal of Statue From Dail. CONTEMPT AT DE VALERA PLAN . * (Received 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, May 19. Following the decision to remove the Queen Victoria statue from the Dail Eireann, a Cosgraveite, Mr. Osmond Grattan Esmonde, son and heir of Sir Thomas Grattan Esmonde, Bart, arrived bareheaded and deposited at the foot of the statue a wreath made of cabbages, cauliflowers, leeks and rhubarb. He solemnly saluted and then entered the Dail. Officials later removed the wreath on which was written the inscription, "Hail and Farewell." It is understood Mr. Esmond's motive was to register his contempt at the de Valera party's decision to remove the statue and replace it with that of an Irish patriot. It may be recalled that Mr. Esmonde was expelled from Australia in 1921.
