THE FLOWER GARDEN. Dahlias are practically over and the tops can be reduced. Cut down Chrysanthemums as soon as flowers are over. Collect and burn all the old Chrysanthemum tops. Rose planting can be done. Prepare the Rose beds as soon as possible. Deep working of the soil is more important than manure. Order any new Roses at once. Summer bedding that is over should be cleared out and the beds dug over. Hand weeding between Anemones and Ranunculi will be necessary. Evergreen shrubs and trees can be transplanted. Cuttings of many shrubs will root if planted at this season. Cut down Hydrangeas to the large prominent buds. THE VEGETABLE GARDEN. Loosen up the sbil between standing crops by forking. Collect and bury all riddled and yellow foliage on Cabbage or Cauliflowers. When gathering Brussels Sprouts, cut off the sprouts, starting at the bottom ones. As soon as Asparagus tops turn yellow cut them off, and as soon as dry burn them on the surface. After cutting down the tops clean off all weeds and also rake off any fallen seeds. Now is the time to apply a coating of stable manure or seaweed to the Asparagus bed. Place Potato sets in boxes to sprout for early planting. Cabbage and Cauliflowers can be planted. When sowing or planting winter vegetables, raised beds are an advantage. Prepare ground for early Potatoes and Peas.
