SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A meeting of the Otahuliu Women's Christian Temperance Union was held in the Methodist Sunday School 011 Thursday, when tli© president, Mrs. Eccersall, was in the chair. The devotional part of the meeting was taken by Mrs. McArthur, and Mrs. W. Taylor Bang. Adjutant Jenkins gave a talk on her life in India. Mrs. Eccersall reported on the recent Dominion convention at Invercargill.

The Wharepai and Rebekah Lodges of Kumeu entertained their friends and members of the surrounding district lodges at a social evening and dance in the Kumeu Hall. Streamers of green lycopodium festooned across the hall made a pretty setting for the gay frocks of the dancers, who enjoyed the latest music. Two Monte Carlo waltzes were competed for, the winners being Miss Petford and Mr. G. Sliuttleworth, and Misa Jurakovich and Mr. J. Lynch. Supper was served by the combined social committees.

An enjoyable evening was spent by the girls of the Mercantile Auxiliary Club on Wednesday evening, when they entertained the inmates of the Epsom Infirmary. The girls were welcomed and thanked by Miss Rudd, lady superintendent. The programme presented included a pianoforte solo by Miss Joyce Montgomery; songs by Miss Je%n Reynolds and Miss Peggy Lee; a Spanish dance by Miss Betty Kerr; humorous items by Miss Edna Thomas, and two short comedies, in the first of which, entitled "The Smart One," the parts ■were taken by Miss Jean Goudie, Miss Peggy Lee and Miss Hilary Booth, and the second, "Snowed up with the Duchess," by Miss Mona Boyd, Miss Hilda Dickey, Miss Edna Thomas and Miss Isabel Wilson.

The Auckland Tramping Club had a successful At Home in the Penwomen's League rooms on Wednesday evening, over 200 members and friends attending. The hall and stage were very nicely arranged, and Mr. and Mrs. Cyril McAdam acted as host and hostess, assisted by the ladies of tho social committee. Among the outstanding items of the evening were two plays, by the club's own members, "A Technical Knockout" and "Snowed Up With a Duchess." Other enjoyable numbers were: "While the Billy Boils," by club members; violin solo, Mr. Owen Fletcher; recitation, Misa Muriel Stone; piano solo, Miss Jennie Lambert; and a competition for a dinner menu, and a P°i dance by the club girls.

He Passenger Transport Social Club i teld a charity dance in the Otaliuhu public hall last Wednesday evening. The proceeds of the dance are to be given t? the Otahuhu Social Service Association for the alleviation of distress in the district. The ladies on the committee Were: Mesdames R. Carter, G. Bishop, McLaren, B. Hill, Battye and Miss Battye, who were in charge of the supper arrangements. The Monte Carlo waltz was -won by Miss Duncan and Miss Howo. Craig, black georgette; Mrs. Johnston, black velvet; Mrs. E. Brown, pink Chantilly lace; Mrs. T. Ball, green satin; Mrs. N. Campbell, pink crepe de chine; Mrs. T. Mark wick, black georgette; Mrs. K. Lindner, pink organdie; Mrs. E. Davies, beige lace; Mrs. H. ShorTock, navy satin; Mrs. D. Hickson, floral georgette; Mrs. Stokes, black taffeta; Mrs. P. Cunningham, black brocade; Mrs. J. Battye, white brocade; Mrs. L. Vitale, white satin; Mrs. D. Twiddle, blue satin; .Mrs, Gollar, black georgette.

A drawing room meeting in connection witli the W.C.T.U., at Devonport was held at the residence of Mrs. L. Blackwood, on Wednesday last, when Mrs. Williams presided. Mesdames Williams and Burnett gave some readings, and Miss King sang.

A reunion of the Thames Girls' Club was held in the Druids' Hall, Newton, on Tuesday evening, when Mrs. McGregor presided. The programme consisted of an overture, violin and piano, by Mr. and Miss Godkin; songs, Mesdames L. Snowling, Fiveash, and Mr. Bevan; elocution, Miss Miller; recitation, Miss Zelda Edwards; recitation and dance, Miss Nola Howe. Competitions were won by Mrs. Nichols, Mrs. Stubbing and Mr. Bevan. The committee present were: Mesdames McPherson, Davison, Taylor, Stubbing, Andrews, Cordes, Nichols, and Misses Aitken, Gillespie, and McGregor. t

The Grey Lynn branch of the League of Mothers held a meeting on Wednesday, in St. Cohimba Hall, when Mrs. Hynes presided over a large attendance. Mrs. Porter read aji interesting letter from a Scottish branch, whose members desired information about the league in New Zealand. Items were given by Mrs. Jurie, a pianoforte solo; Miss Ruth Gourdie, recitation; and Miss Beadle, songs. The address for the afternoon waiT given by Miss Davis who spoke on "Tha Spiritual Side of Our Natures. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs. Halls and Mrs. Holmes. • • •

The Northcpte Returned Soldiers' Association held the annual dance last evening in the King's Theatre. Mrs. W. E. Carter, wife of the president, was hostess, and the ladies' committee comprised: Mesdames W. E. Carter, £. Townsliend, J. R. Bethwaite, W. Watson, H. Rossiter, A. E. Hartigan, I. Davidson, A. C. Pugh, J. Olds, and Miss Ruby Gifford, with Mr. L. J. Poff as secretary. Among those present were: Mrs. R. Martin, Mayoress of Northcote; Mrs. F.
