GIFTS TO MUSEUM.

MAORI SECTION BENEFITS. Some more valuable gifts to the War Memorial Museum were reported at a meeting of the council of the Auckland Institute and Museum yesterday afternoon. The number was 37, bringing the accessions for the ye-ar to 154. In the Maori section a notable addition was presented by Mrs. E. Ward, of Tauranga, from the collection of her late husband, Colonel Ward. This comprises two fine greenstone pendants, prcenstone fish hooks, large bowling stones, chisels, sinkers and adzes. Mrs. S. Hewson has given a stone adze, Mr. John Thomson, of Maioro, four interesting specimens, a stone fish hook shank, a stone fish hook and carved sinker, a narrow gauge and a chert adze, Mr. R. T. Seccombe V a limestone pounder, a wooden spade blade, a wooden beater and a greenstone toki, also an unusual stalactite, Mr. A. Downey a well used hoanga found on the Muriwai sand hills. An old sermon glass has been added to

the Dr. Bncknill collection by Mrs. Bucknill. Miss K. Keesing has presented four ivory fans of the Victorian period, and Miss Briar Gardner has given a set of painted' pottery vases made by herself for the native plant table. National history specimens received include many from the Solomon Islands from Mr. George Smith. These comprise marine and land specimens and include. a fine one of the sea eagle. Mr. Pycroft has presented natural history specimens from the Chicken Island. Fish specimens have been received from the Fishermen's Coop., a toucan and a black-headed myna from the zoo, a bird' specimen from the Carriers' Association, and Dr. H. H. Allan has given an extensive collection of wild and cultivated oat specimens. Messrs. Wright, Stephenson have given 38 sample packets of agricultural seeds. Mr. W. Martin, of Blenheim, has presented .specimens of native plants for display. The geology department has received two ammonites from England presented by Mrs. Bucknill, a glass model of the Cullinan diamond, given by Mr. H. B. Douslin, and fossil shark and. fish teeth have been presented by Mr. A. Wade and Mr. T. Whiteman, and Mr. G. Nevill
