Damon and Pythias were two Pythagoreans whose names have become proverbial as types of devoted friends. When Pythias was sentenced to death for conspiring against Dionysius, tyrant of Syracuse, Damon offered to die in his stead should Pythiae not return after being allowed to visit his friends.
