OLD AUCKLAND GRAMMAR BOY. DR. F. J. TURNER'S CAREER. (By Telegraph.— Own Correspondent.) DUNEDIN, this clay. Mr Francis John Turner, who headed the honours list at the University cappin * ceremony with the degree of doctor of science, was educated at the Auckland Grammar School, gaining a university entrance scholarship in 1920. In 1921 at Auckland University College he took the engineering course and subjects for the B.Sc, winning a premium in chemistry, and (in 1922) in geology. In 1923 Mr. Turner was employed by the State Forest Service in testing work in the engineering laboratory, at the end of which year he gained a senior scholarship in geology, the Sir George Grey scholarship, and completed his B Sc. He continued his engineering studies in 1925 and graduated M.Sc. with first-class honours, and was awarded tho Von Haast prize and also a Government national research scholarship, which he relinquished to take up an appointment as lecturer in the geology department of the Otago University. During the last four years he has been engaged in petrological research, under the supervision of Professor Benson. He is a Fellow of the Geological Society of London.
