COMBINED 'VARSITIES, VISITING RUGBY TEAM. THREE TOUH X.Z. PREVIOUSLY. Of tho twenty-two men comprising the playing strength of the Australian 'Varsities Kngby team, which opened its programme against Auckland University College to-day, and meets New Zealand in the first Test at Eden Park next Saturday, three have been seen previously on Dominion iields—Wostfield, Kennedy and Robertson. In addition Lowndee, who hails from Cisbornc. was formerly a member of the Otago University side. The following notes on the members of the side may be of interest in view of their second game at Auckland at the week-end:— Full-backs. R. West field (age 24, height sft 9in, weight, lost.) is probably the best fullback in Australia now that the team for South Africa has sailed. His kicking, handling and defence this ecason have been splendid. He visited New Zealand with the 102S New .South Wales eidc, and has represented Australia in his own country.

T. E. IT. Laurie (23—5.10—10.10) is an ex-Australian rules player from Melbourne. His kicking and handl ng aro well above the average, and he can also lit into the. •wing-thrcequarter position, where he played against Auckland. Three-quarters. A. K. Kennedy (21—5.9—11.8) is a hard runner sure handler and eouvul in defence, lie has been a member of the Sydney 'Varsity team since 1020, and has represented New South Wales on a number of occasions. He was in New Zealand with tho 1029 Australian 'Varsities combination, along with his brother, both being well remembered in Auckland. Ho is captain of the 1933 side. Jan T!. Turner (23—5.11—11.7) i« another Mclbourhfan. He is fast and a fino handler, and has been a member of Melbourne. 'Varsity fifteen for many seasons. D. P. Rowo (22—5.11—11.0) is a centre who has been in and out of the Sydney first grade team for three years. On occasions he is brilliant in attack, and i« splendid in positional play. Five-Eighths. C. H. Lowndes (22—5.9—10.10) played for Victoria against the Waratah's, en route to South Africa. Ho is vicecaptain and a native of Cisborne (New Zealand). '

11. Kecs (22 —5.11—12.3) is regarded as the host five-eighth in New (South Wales. "Has any amount of pace, is a good tackier, .and has great penetrative powers.

Half-Backs. IT. IT. Pcareou (20—5.10—10.9) replaces the New South Wales Rhodes scholar, J. McShane, and is expected to give great service at the base. J. Charapain (22—5.5—10.0) is a good player of sound experience. Forwards. K. Harris is a hardtackling breakaway, and an excellent handler. Can play in the rearguard, too. E. L. Elias (23—5.10—12.5) is a hard rucker and a player of wide experience, having been in the Sydney 'Varsity team for live seasons. R. Yuncken, B. Spring and R. 'Emerson are all Melbourne players, who have been in the 'Varsity team for three seasons. All are solid nickers. A. W. Robertson (23—0.2—15.0) played in the 1029 'Varsities team in New Zealand. With the experience gained on this tour it is predicted that ho will develop into one- of the best locks in the State. He was a member.of the winning inter-'Varsity eight in 1031, which eoinc critics advocated sending to the Olympic Games at Los Angeles. C. McWilliam (22—CO—13«t) is a hard tackier and rucker, and has eliown marked ability on the line-out. Ho is a splendid tennis player, and also a line ehot putter. J. Theodore (21—5.11—125t) is a son of the ex-Federal Treasurer. Hβ is a splendid rake,' and when lie played in tho combined Australian Universities team, broke even with E. Bonis, the Australian representative rake, playing for Queensland. 11. Bond (22—5 M 0—12.2) is a promising front row forward. J. P. Guntlier, tho manager,, represented Sydney 'Varsity at boxing in Melbourne in 1920. He also got liis Rugby colours in 1931 for the Victorian match, aiid in 1032 was manager of the team which went to Brisbane. He is secretary of the Rugger Club, and vicepresident of the Boxing Club, of which he was captain last year. The remaining four members of the side aro rceervee, and all hail from Sydney: P. Harduian (three-quarter), R. T). Booth, N. Lcleu and R. Mackay (forwards). Some.of the MeTboiirnians played for Victoria when tho State fifteen drew 12 all with the Australian team en route for South Africa. At one stage in the second epoll the Victorians led 12—3. N.Z.
