ORCHESTRAL CONCERT.
GERMAN CLUB'S PERFORMANCE. , There was a large attendance at the Lewie Eady Hall last evening to hear the first concert given this year by the orchestra of the German Club. The original programme had to be altered to some degree owing to the loss of > number of orchestral parts in a recent fixe. Despite this handicap the playeie, under the cooductoreMp of Mr. Henry C. Engel, gave a meritorious performance. The principal feature of the evening wae" the playing of the favourite "Hungarian Rhapsody" No. 2 (Liszt), which was given with verve and precision to the very evident great appreciation of the audience. Other numbers which met with favour were:—"The Gladiator's Farewell," a. stirring opening number, •Slavonic Rhapsody, "II Guarany" overture, Sir Edwai'd German's dainty' "Dances from Henry VIII.," waltz, "Tales from the Vienna Woods" and "March Hongroise." Two German folk eongs beautifully rendered concluded the concert. A noteworthy ensemble vrsa maintained throughout, and the conductor, Mr. H. C. Engel is to <be complimented upon the -state of efficiency tp..,: which his combination has been brought-' The assisting artists were Miss Laura V Walker, Tvhoee well-trained soprano voicp;' was heard to advantage in Brahjms' beau-', tiful eongs, ','Sapphie Ode" and "Therje" 'Mong the Willows/' and' Mr. Peter?. Dawson pleased with a , -resonant rendi- = tion of "When Dawn Breaks," giving as ■ an encore "Because I Was Shy." Mr. Vincent Aspey contributed a violin .'eolo, "Siciliana and Rigaudon;" and as an encore Schubert's "Aye Maria." Variations from the musical features were recitations by Miss Edna Thomas, a short play under her direction and conjuring tricks by Mr. E. Axford.
During the course of the evening the president, Mr. 0. J. Thedens, mentioned that at the recent fire in, Mr. Engel'e home the whole of the club's music scores for that concert had been destroyed. It was only through the extraordinarygenerosity shown by musical institutions and individuals that it had been possible, ':':, to carry on the concert with little variation from the original, programme.
