TARIFF OVERHAUL.
COMMISSION'S TASK. FIRST SITTING ON JUNE 1. MANUFACTURERS-' EVIDENCE, Advice has been received in Auckland that the Tariff Commission, charged with an investigation into and a complete ■revision of the existing Customs duties, J will commence.its sittings on June 1. No indication is given, however, as to the centre in which the initial hearing of evidence will take place. In. the meantime the various business and commercial interests, through their local and national organisations, are collecting and collating data in order that comprehensive representations may he made. The Auckland Manufacturers.' Association is busily engaged on the preparation of the case to be stated on behalf .of the secondary industries of New Zealand., To facilitate this work ae far a<s the Auckland branch is concerned, individual trade groups are requested by Mr. J. Findlay, eecretary of the association to furnish, him immediately with all the data, in their possession for transmission to the New Zealand Federation, in Wellington.
The idea U that each of the sections represented in Auckland should provide data, which at headquarters will be collated with the information similarly received from the same groups in the other centres, and then, with these facts Oβ a basis, the federation will eet, out, on behalf of each industry, a comprehensive case for submission to the commission in Wellington. Following those representations, witnesses from tho various trade units will have an opportunity, when the commission visite the different centres, to tender evidence supporting and supplementing the general c.isc, as presented lo the investigating body. By this means, it is considered, the case of the manufacturing industries will receive- the most effective representation.
