GRAIN AND PRODUCE.

POTATO PRICES LOWER. OATS AND C'HAI'F FIRMER. ■ Hoping for higher prices as a result of the shipping strike, growers in various : parts of the country scut all the potatoes 1 they could market to this centre. As a result there is, at the moment, a surplus above requirements, and, instead of values advancing further they show a slight . reduction. Not only have Manawatu growers fulfilled their Auckland orders, • which had been delayed on account of 1 unfavourable weather, but they have sent up quantities on consignment. To show the '■ keenness, coupled with optimism, that ■ has been in evidence it may be mentioned • that small lots of Canterbury potatoes, which had found their way as far as Wellington, were railed up to this centre. It i« scarcely necessary to add that the • heavy freight charges will prevent these : being liquidated at n profit. The first ■ direct shipment since the strike is cx- ■ pected at the end of the week. Onions. There has been no change in the market i for onions, which still sell steadily at i about 8/ per cwt. Oats and Chaff. There has been a decided firming in the Southern market for oats and chaff, and as/ a consequence local rates have . been slightly advanced njj. round. Fowl Wheat. Fowl wheat is selling steadily at about 4/8 per bushel, through etore. The Southern market is reported as firm at recent quotations. Maize. Holders of maize have weakened during the past few weeks, and merchants have been able to make a further slight reduction in their selling price, which now stands at 4/H. ' J ' )le lower price and cooler weather have assisted consumption. Stocks of crushed maize are now rather scarce. Bran and Pollard. There is no alteration in local prices of bran and pollard, but the Australian pollard market is very firm, and there may be a difficulty in replacing existing stocks to sell at current prices.
