On the door-post of many Jewish houses there is to be seen a little metai "container" called a mezzuzah, meaning "doorpost." It is a symbol handed down among .Jewish, people from earliest times. Inside the mezzuzah is a scrap of parchment with Hebrew writing upon it, the' words being two passages from the Bible which tell the Jew that so long as he upholds his religion, all will be well with him. A mezzuzah is placed on the door-post of a Jew's house so that it shall be the first thing seen on entering and the last on going out, and be a perpetual reminder of his religion.
