LEAGUE FOOTBALL.
MEETING OF REFEREES. There wae <a largo attendance at the meeting of the Auckland Itugby League Referees' Association last evening, Mr. A. Ball presiding. The referee critic, Mr. T. Hill, reported a good rcsponee to hie appeal for the strict enforcement of the play-the-ball rule. Mr. McCowatt, a member of the appointments board, pointed out a laxity in connection with the iive yarde off-side rule. A player charging within five yards was definitely off-side and could not carry on when an opponent fumbled in fielding the ball. If the latter wae able to recover and start a passing bout, the referee was entitled to apply the advantage tfule and allow play to proceed.
