RACING AT WANGANUI.
THE WINTER MEETING. i JEN APPARENTLY RECOVERED. PLATEAU AND BEACOX FIRE. i (From Our Own Correspondent.) WANGANUI, Monday. J. Barry has been engaged to ride Arastar and The Tiger on Thursday. Arastar looks all {he better for Ilia race at Hawera, and should run well in his engagements. The- Tiger went amiss on the eve of the Kgmont meeting, but is now said .to be all right again, 'and there are not wanting those:who expect to see him among the winners soon. Jen was given a couple of rounds this morning on the flat at a solid pace, and moved freely. He has apparently thrown off the stiffness caused by his fall at Hawera, and his connections expect hir.i to run a big race in the Grandstand Steeplechase on Thursday. The fact that Beacon Fire lias been paid up for in the Empire Handicap at Wunganui -suggests that his mission at Ellerslie will be the Cornwall Handicap on the nr.st day, though he also figures in the sprint event the same day. This son of Lackhara goes well on a soft track, but he is a big horse for a light rider to handle. His form at Wanganui will Lrive an indication ae to his prospects in the north. Arvada could not handle tile heavy going at Hawera, but she will probably be seen to better advantage in the Winter Oats on Thursday, as she usually runs well here. It F. Tilley has Plateau fit and well the Aero gelding 6hould give a good account of himself in the llata Hack, though ho has topweight, 9.10. It is safe to say that Pango will be favourite after his good showing at Hawera, when he was making his reappearance after a long spell, but he will have his work cut out to beat Plateau if the latter is at his best. ]\lr.- L. G. Paul has Arisus looking very fit, and the Thespian gelding has been galloping in attractive style. If Arisus can stay out the mile and a quarter lie will take a lot of beating in that event. He was finishing on strongly at the end of a mile on Saturday, run in 1.44, though he had only a light boy up. J. Coleman, formerly well known <fe a rider . on this coast; but who ' has been residing in.Melbourne for some 16 years, is back in Wanganui, on a short visit. Hβ rode Kilmaxnock when that gelding won the Wanganui Cup in 1909, and after going to Australia did a lot of hurdle riding-in Victoria. 'For some years past hehas been training horses with a fair amount of success. He has seen all the best -horses that have raced in Australia' during the last 12 years or so, and has no hesitation in declaring that Winooka is the most brilliant galloper of the lot, not even excepting Gloaming or Phar Lap.
