Ten children have died and a large number of others are seriously ill in Venice, Milan, Genoa and elsewhere as the result of inoculation with an antidiphtheria serum prepared at the Naples Institute. An official, communique states that owing to deplorable negligence a quantity of anti-toxins, after being passed by the laboratory of the Health Bureau, were subjected to further manipulation and mixed with others. The director of the institute, Professor Terni, and his assistant have been arrested and charged with criminal negligence. The affected children are being treated by Italy's foremost specialists. As the incubation period of the majority of those vaccinated has passed, or is passing, it is hoped there will be no more deaths.
