AUSTRALIAN . CRUISERS. PROBLEM OF PAY RATE. Exchange on money is causing complications in the plans for the exchange of cruisers between Australia and the Royal Navy and, In the meantime, a decision ha« been delayed until the framing of the defence estimates for the Budget. It is regarded as desirable that the personnel of Australian cruisers should have the experience of operating as part of a big fleet, probably in the Mediterranean, but if British cruisers go t<> Australia 011 exchange the crews will be paid in sterling and therefore would enjoy in Australian ports a nominal increase of their pay by 25 per cent. The Australian Navy Board would be reluctant to ask the Australian personne to accept a reduction of pay by —> l"- r cent while it was in the Mediterranean, merely because of the adverse exchange. At the same time, the board 1= reluctant to ask the taxpayers to pay the 't T-finml per cent which the rate of exchange" would entail in the pay of jersonneLof -cruisers sent abroad.
