SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A social evening was held in the Graham's Beach Hall, Awhitu, in honour of Mi6s E. Peterson. The hall was artistically decorated with large ferns, pink cosmos, and pink and cream chrysanthemums." After cupper, an enjoyable evening was brought to a close. • • • * The Epsom branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union met last week in the Methodist Hall, when Mrs. Neal presided. Two musical items were contributed by Dr. Jeanie Craig, of Onehunga, and were much enjoyed. Mrs. Griffin- gave en interesting travel talk of visits paid to other countries. She spoke of the British Isles, France, Germany, Denmark, Belgium, Spain, and E^t '. . ' . . • - A pleasing function, took place at Glenbrook, when an afternoon was held by the Glenbrook West Sewing Guild ( and friends at the residence of Mrs. M. R. McElwain in honour of the silver wedding anniversary of one of the guild's most esteemed members, Mrs. Jones. Mrs. Jones, who is a keen worker, has on many occasions lent her beautiful garden for the guild's functions. Mrs. McElwain presented the guest of honour with a bouquet, and Mrs. McCrystal, president of the guild, presented one to Mrs. McElwain in recognition of her untiring work as secretary. After a pleasant time, taken up with music and a competition, Mrs. McElwain entertained her guests to afternoon tea. The wedding cake was cut by Mrs. Jones, after which those present drank her health, and wished her long life and happiness. Mrs. McCrystal then presented Mrs. Jones with a crystal vase in appreciation of. her many kindnesses to the guild. »The singing of "For They Are Jolly Good Fellows" and the passing of a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs. McElwain for her hospitality brought the function to a close. • * * ' *' On Thursday afternoon an interesting two hours were spent at the Otago Women's Club, when six women candidates for election to local bodies addressed the members on the aims and objects of their respective causes. Mrs. Ewihg, vice-president, was in the chair and welcomed the speakers, who included Mrs. W. A. Ross, Miss Runciman, Mrs. Herbert and Miss Farquhar (candidates for the Hospital Board), Mrs. Frances Don (candidate for the Hospital Board and City Council), and Mrs. Evelyne Bennet (candidate for the City Council). The large attendance was much impressed by the words of the speakers who, at the close of the afternoon, were entertained to tea by the club. • • • • The/ Otahuhu Old-time Dance Club held 'a successful dance in the Public Hall, Otahuhu, last Saturday evening, when old favourite dances were set to ( modern music, the hesitation waltz, maxina, and three-step boing very much : in demand. The first heat of the club's waltzing competition was held, and six couples were chosen by the judges, Messrs. F. Arnold and J. Hedges, to compete in the final. The Monte Carlo waltzes were won by Mrs. tyndn and Mr. Clark, who won the first, the second being won by Miss M. Miller and Mr. Stevens. Supper arrangements were in i the hands of Mesdames Parker, Mark- j wick, and Taggart. Extras were played by Miss Mavis Tucker. Great interest is being shown in the Protection of Women and Children Society, which is holding a bring-and-buy afternoon next Thursday, in St. Mary's Hall, Parnell. An urgent appeal is extended to the public to attend, as the society is sadly in need of funds to carry on this worthy object.
