(Received 10 a.m.) CANBERRA, this day. The questions involving embargoes on potatoes, fruit and vegetables, proposed to be embodied in the new trade agreement between Australia and New Zealand, are still the subject of negotiations, and an agreement will not be submitted for Parliamentary approval for some months.
This statement was made by Mr. J. A. Lyons in reply to four members of. the House of Representatives, who formed a deputation to the Prime Minister, and made strong representations against the rumoured lifting of the embargo on New Zealand potatoes.
They asked Mr. Lyons to make a statement Ho allay the anxieties of potato growers regarding the future of the industry if they were exposed to the risk of disease and competition from New Zealand when there was production in excess of local requirements in the Dominion.
