HUGE MOUTH OF THE WHALE.

So many strange tales are told of the remarkable digestive abilities of sharks that one is inclined to believe that some of the tales one hears are mere ( "fish istories."

. Sharks, however, are the scavengers of the deep, and eat the foulest organic matter cast into the sea; they have been known to swallow bags, tins and sacks of coke. One, in pursuit of a whale's [tongue, made a mistake in his intended victim. The whale was one of the sperm species. It opened its mouth as wide as the shark could desire, but took the shark in bodily and swallowed it.

A little later the whale was caught by the late Frank Bullen's ship, and inside the whale was the shark, 15ft in length, and as lively and vicious as when at largo in the sea. This story is told by a reliable authority on such subjects, and there is no .causc to doubt its authenticity.

Green apples from an orchard may have drastic effects on the small boy who has been unwise enough to eat them, but his feelings must be as nought compared to the pains of the imprudent whale that swallowed a shark, whole> and "all alive-o."
