COTTON REEL STAND.
(Sent in by Jessie Meikle, As tie? Avenue, New Lynn; age IG.J
Wouldn't you like to make this pretty cotton reel stand for your own dressing table, or for mother ? It holds four reels of cotton or silk and is easy to make and so neat and handy that it saves a frenzied searching when you want some cotton in a hurry.
Cut four circles of cardboard, each about six inches in diameter, and cover one side of each with cretonne, pretty sateen, or other material. To do this you must cut the material into circles about 7 J inches in diameter, run a gathering thread round the edge, slip the cardboard inside, and draw up the thread, finishing off the ends firmly. When you have tlie four circles covered, lay them together in pairs, right sides outwards, and join together with coloured embroidery thread. Short stitches all slanting in the same direction are best for, this, and if you do this in a thread to match one of the colours 011 the cretonne you'll find this stitching makes a pretty decoration.- ' f After both pairs have been joined, arrange the cotton reels evenly in position and mark the exact centre of each spool. -The mark on both circles must be in exactly the same position. Pierce each of the eight, mark into small holes, and thread two pieces of ribbon through the holes in one of the circles. One piece of ribbon goes through two holes, and the other through the remaining two, and they arc then put through the reels of cotton and again through the holes in the other circle and tied in two dainty bows on top of your novelty. The reels will now turn round easily to allow you to pull out a length of cotton, and when empty can be renewed in a' moment. I Don't you' tliink mother would be delighted with one of these?
