Writing strictly, the Latin people were the inhabitants of Latium, in ancient Italy. The Latin races of to-day are the descendants, more or less remote, of the races which speak languages more or less derived from the Latin tongue. Such races are the Italians, Spanish and Portuguese, and French. The South and Central American countries are called Latin America because their inhabitants are of Spanish and Portuguese extraction. /
