LOWER FREIGHTS.
The offer of the Blue Star Line to carry cargo between New Zealand and Britain at lower rates is an important development in our overseas trade. The need for reduction in this particular cost was pointed out in these columns a few weeks ago. The producer has had all, or nearly all, of his other costs lowered substantially, but shipping freights have remained much as they were. An important English line, owning ships fully equipped to carry our produce, now proposes to enter the New Zealand trade on a lower freight basis, provided it is assured of one Homeward loading per month. The Dairy and Meat Boards can hardly reject this offer. The effect of it will not be confined to the limited operations here indicated. It will mean that New Zealand, both as exporter and importer, may expect a period of all-round freight reduction, to the benefit of producer and consumer.
