SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A 500 card-'tournament on behalf of the Henderson Catholic Church was held in the' Convent school-cur Monday night. There .was a fair .attendance, and the prize- winners; were Mrs. Halias 1,. consolation,. Miss Phyllis Ozich; Mr. Robert Norcross I, : and consolation, Mr. Lucans. ♦ * * • Mrs. E. F. Wilson, of Tainui Road, Devonport,. entertained a number of guests at her residence yesterday, the occasion being a gift afternoon for the fancy stall .at the forthcoming Vauxhall School autumn fair. After" viewing the many gifts received, the guests participated in competitions, which were won by Mesdames E. H. Little and Boswell, afternoon tea then being served. Amongst those present were:—Mesdames Mason, Little, N. Burgess, Gray, Skinner, Bowles, Morton, Watkins and Melhose. I.' # ■* » Mies Connie McLeod was hostess at a gift evening held in honour of Miss Bessie Stevenson, on Saturday night, at the ;Queen's Hall, Ponsonby, when there were over ninety guests present, and a very , iappyj time was-spent with games and-, dancing-.- During the evening Mrs. N. Whyte rendered a solo, Mr. D. Whyte violin selections, and a Highland reel was ■ given by. Misses C. McLeod, M. Ward, Messrs. D. Court and C. McLeod. Music was supplied by Mr. M. Brown's string orchestra and St. Andrew's" Pipe Band. • • » • There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Papatoetoe bratich of the Mothers' Union, which was held in the St." George's Church, - Papatoetoe, yesterday.' After the devotional service,' which was conducted by the Rev.: T."H. C. Partridge, an interesting address on She "Status of Maori Women, Past and Present," was given by Mrs. Rewa Bennett, who is a well-known in Auckland. Afternoon tea arranged by Mrs. S. Stevens and Mrs. D. .Wily brought- a pleasant meeting 'to a- close; , A. farewell; party was tendered to Mr. Howard .Colmore-Williams at Springside House, Helensville, on Wednesday evening last by the Helensville Swimming Club. During the evening Mr. J. A. Stan away, president of the club, presented Mr.'Williams with a. small gift, and a very enjoyable evening was brought to a finish by singing "Auld Lang Syne." The winners of.the Monte Carlo were Miss Jean Hill and Mr. J. Eddleston> and the winners of the spot waltz- were Miss Mona Dowling and Mr. T. Rapano. Among those present were: Mesdames A. Miss Muriel Innes,.the .convener, in outlining'the aims of ,the section, stressed f.he fact that only., by the study andl practice of 'literature and' journalism— ■the sharing of mistakes and difficulties discoveries andtriumphs, can young people, the writers of to-morrow, hope one ' day to' become fully-fledged penwomen. It is with the idea of encouraging and fostering literary appreciation young writers that the-club has inaugurated this new section, and iudgW by the interest and enthusiasm displayed by the members it would seem that the venture is to prove a success. Abbott. »*» . * A delightful bridge and 500 party was held at the Farmers' Reception Hall yesterday afternoon, when Mrs. R. E. N. Matthews, of Kingsland, entertained the members of the Rocky Nook Croquet Club and visitors from sister clubs. The tea tables were artistically arranged in the club's colours, gold and cherry toned chrysanthemums, and during the tea recess the hostess was presented with a bouquet of tho same colours, with long satin streamers. Mrs. Tongue made the presentation, Mrs. Hyde thanked the hostess on behalf of the club, and Mrs. Badeley also expressed appreciation on behalf -of the visitors. The prize winners were: Mesdames F. Preston and Hyde for bridge, and Mesdames Black and W. Keightley for 500. Mrs. Matthews, who is president of the Croquet Club, received her guests in a smart leaf brown flat crepe, with small cape and hat to tone. Among the players were: —Mesdames Badeley, A. H. Keesing, Martin, Peckham, Grace, Hyde, J. Crawford, J. T. Crawford, Magill, McAneney, Keyes, Patterson, Garland, Walkley, Preston, Page, Urquhart, Hodgson, Wiles, Maiden, Butler, Keatley, W. Halliwell (2), and Mclnncs. **• * * A party was held by the Writers' Club in the clubrooms this week, oil the occasion of its second birthday, when Mrs. I. M. Cluett, president, presided, and a good programme, comprising- original sketches, songs and recitations, was given. Miss Mary Spiers rendered Mrs. Cluett's "My Monkey," and Mrs. Doust's play, "Judgment," was much enjoyed. Those taking part in this plav were Mesdames Nello Porter, Richmond, Spiers, Peacock and Mi6s Pat ?cott-Young. A group of "Songs of Primroses," the words by Mrs. Buchanan and the music by Mr. 0- Buchanan, was charmingly sung by Miss Blades. Another song, "Reverie," the music and words by Mrs. Ryburn, was also sung by Miss Blades, and also a "Twilight Song," written by Mrs. Crump and set to music by Mr. 0. Buchanan. A sketch enttiled "Celebrities," written by Mrs. I. M. Cluett, was given by the author, and poems by Gloria Rawlinson, entitled "Let's Tune Into Fairyland" and "Belinda the Cow," were given by Miss Mary Spiers. Others contributing to the programme were: —Mrs. Nello Porter, with songs; Miss Rose Kennedy, a group of Maori songs; Mr. Russell-Wood, humorous sketches written by A. P. Herbert; and songs by Mr. Richmond. During the evening a presentation was made by the club members to Mrs. I. M. Cluett as a mark of appreciation of her untiring work for the good of the club. Supper, at which a handsome birthday cake was cut, brought a successful evening to a close.
