AN OPPORTUNITY IN SPORT.
Compared "with persecution, assault and murder of Jews, simply because they are Jews, the exclusion of a player from the German Davis Cup team for the same reason may seem a trivial matter. It is, however, something that is not only of interest to the world in itself, but provides an opportunity for an easy, sharp and spectacular demonstration of opinion. The abominable crimes that are marking this campaign against the Jews in Germany are not so easily countered by action abroad as is this stupid denial to Jews of the right to take part in an international game. Other countries can at once decide that so long as this denial by Germany persists they will not meet Germany on the tennis court. _ Games are supposed to transcend national and racial barriers. Even in America, where the colour line against black people is drawn sharply, negroes are chosen for Olympic Games teams. The German decision is an outrage against the spirit of sport, and as such should be dealt with drastically and at once by other _ nations. There is a growing cult of athleticism in Germany, and possibly a definite stand by other countries against the application of anti-Jewish prejudice to tennis might impress many Germans more than protests by foreign statesmen* .
