POTATO TRADE.
ANXIETY IN AUSTRALIA,
The possibility of the embargo on New Zealand potatoes for Australia being lifted is causing fears among growers and commission agents in New South Wales, according to the "Sydney Morning Herald." A Sussex Street agent said'that he had received many letters seeking information and opposing the removal of the embargo. A letter he had just received from New Zealand indicated that the price there of potatoes was 50/ a ton. If the embargo was lifted it would be possible to land potatoes in Australia at a price sufficiently remunerative to enable competition with Tasmanian and Victorian produce. The Sydney market was £7 to £8 10/ a ton.
It is asserted that if the embargo is removed the Australian market, which has shown a brighter outlook in the past month, and" v/hicli will bo slightly short of supplies this year, will be swamped with New Zealand lines. The growers, many of whom are facing destitution, it is stated, will receive a setback, and have their legitimate market usurped. In addition, it is stated, it will be impossible to prevent some of the potatoes being used for seed. This, it is contended, will probably do great damage to Australian I strains.
