RACING AT RICCARTON.

CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB

THE OPENING DAY.

PROGRAMME FOR MONDAY.

CBy Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, this day.

Tlie autumn meeting of the Canterbury | Jockey Club will open at Riccarton on Monday. Local stables are well represented, while there are sufficient visiting horses to greatly increase the interest in the various events. The long spell of dry weather has left the tracks very hard, but the course should be in good order, as it can be watered if no rain falls in the meantime. The High-weight. The Kildare High-weight has attracted a strong field, but the lack of qualified hurdle riders will complicate the position. Rocket has got through a lot of good work and is very well. Juniper is also a fit horse, but his form has been moderate. Royal Love looks to be coming back to his best, while Monastic and Takatamu have had recent racing to help them. Rothen, who is in great order, has raced consistently and is due for a win soon. Of the others Tea Garden, Pure Gold and Wealth appeal most. Those that may be favourites are ROYAL LOYE ROTHEN ROCKET. Champagne Stakes. Seven remain in the Champagne Stakes. Guarantee showed good form early, but has not done so well lately. Fracas beat him in the Dunedin Champagne Stakes, while he also beat him in the Champion Two-year-old Plate at Trentham. Red Manfred has several wins to his credit over five furlongs and should be hard to beat. Pegged Exchange has some useful handicap form to his credit, but will need to improve to beat this class. The best backed may be FRACAS „ RED MANFRED. Autumn Plate. Argentic and Zeebrugge are smart hacks, but may be reserved for later events. Niggerhead is very sound and should run out a solid mile. Chief Light and Fleeting Glance are both in good order. Kemal Pasha is a smart miler, who will be hard to beat. Importance won at Waimate through her stamina and should be dangerous. The bulk of the money may go on KEMAL PASHA IMPORTANCE FLEETING GLANCE. The Russley Plate. Trivet, who is top weight in the Russley Plate, won the Lyttelton Plate on this course in February, giving 81b to Silent Flight, who ran second. There is now, 111b between 'them, but the result may be the same. Gaysome was third in the race mentioned and now meets Trivet on much better terms, and must have a good chance. Sweet Agnes has disappointed at times, but if at. her best will have. to be respected. Acceptable and Sundancer look the best of the remainder. Those that may be in demand are TRIVET GAYSOME SILENT FLIGHT. The Big Event. A "big field 'is carded for the Great Easter Handicap, the chief event of the day, for which Cricket Bat is top weight. He disappointed at Trentham, but has been galloping well lately. Gay Crest has not won this season, but he is in good orderi ■ ■ Great Star is in capital condition and should be capable of running a solid mile. Ruling Light showed smart form at Trenthatia in January, but she has failed since then.' However, she looks well. Irish' Lancer raced attractively in the Jockey Club Handicap at Riccarton in November, but he has no recent form to his credit, while he has gone up in the weights. True Shaft has been sprinting well and may be hard to ■ beat in any event he contests at the meeting. Gustavo has improved since he raced in February, though he would have been benefited by more races. His track gallops cannot be overlooked. Princess Argosy has done well since she arrived at Riccarton and is in. her best form. Ranelagh has never been better than he is at present, and if he goes kindly he must be hard.to.beat. Palermo would only need to produce his best form to be dangerous. Mount Boa would appeal on a soft track. Rebel Song has not had much racing, but he has come on quickly. His recent track form has been good, and he- looks like playing a prominent part in the race. In a race that looks open, the following may have most support REBEL SONG GREAT STAR RULING LIGHT. The Papanui Handicap. Crash, who is at the head of the Papanui Handicap, won at his" last start at Riccarton, but he is set an infinitely harder task now. Red Royal has had no racing for some time. Cottesmore is a smart North Island hack, who ran third and then first at Trentham last month. .Silver Streak 'Was placed at Oamaru in his last two starts and should go well. Heather Glow can go fast, and six furlongs will suit him. Manetho is another speedy sort, who will be prominent for a long way, as will Golden Dart, who will be a winner before long. Those who may command most attention are COTTESMORE HEATHER GLOW SILVER STREAK. The Sockburn Handicap. The Sockburn Handicap will give a number of the Great Autumn Handicap candidates a preliminary. Shatter is at the top of his form and he must be hard to dispose of. The journey may be too short for Concentrate, but Eminent can be relied upon to run a good race. He has been out of the money only once in his last seven starts. Jaloux has no recent form. Tout 1e Mond was placed at Trentham last month and has done well since then. True Shaft is in the Great Easter, but may be reserved for this race, in which case he may be prominent. llie principal fancies may be. SHATTER EMINENT TRUE SHAFT. The Courtney Handicap.
