AUCKLAND PRESBYTERY.
MISSION FINANCE DIFFICULTY
The Auckland Presbytery met at St. David Church this week, the moderator, Mr. J. W. Ryburn, presiding. Anzac Day.—The choice of the newest member of Presbytery, the Rev. E. J. Tipler, late of Dunedin, was made by the meeting for the Anzac Day address to the secondary schools in the Town Hall.
Youths Entering Service.—The meeting adopted a letter from the Rev. D. C. Heron, convener of the Dunedin Theological Hall committee, recommending that all yonug men applying to Presbytery for certificates of entry into church service be called before Presbytery for personal examination. This would tend towards the raising of the standard in the ministry, for which over 80 young men were studying at the moment.
May' Conferences.—With the purpose of bringing homo to the congregations the gravity of the financial outlook for missions, 'it was decided to call a conference of the congregations early in May, when a statement of finances and an appeal for greater and more generous giving will be presented. For five years the congregational shortages have totalled £4.5,000., With legacies and legacy accounts, this has been, reduced by £41,150. However, this source of revenue is expected to lessen in -the near future, and unless giving increased the church will have to reduce expenditure on its mission. work. A further penny a week from communicants would have balanced the budget, and the treasurer suggested that this would not be too great a burden for the congregations.
Rev. A. A. Murray.—A letter was read from the Chester Presbytery, England, to the effect that the suspension of the Rev. A. A. Murray, late of Auckland, had been lifted, and that he had been enrolled as a member of the Presbytery. The letter was received. Art Unions Protest. —It was decided in response to an appeal from the Rev. W. Lawson Marsh to appoint several speakers to meet the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. J. A. Young, next week to protest against the multiplication .of art unions, and also the proposed State lottery in aid of hospitals. Jfew Year's Message.—The Rev. R. E. Evans moved to the effect that the moderator of the General Assembly broadcast a New Year's message to the New Zealand public from IYA between 11.30 p.m. and 12.10 a.m. on December 31-January 1, 1033-4. The suggestion, which was adopted, was prompted by a similar procedure in Victoria.
