A card evening under the auspices of ; the Grey Lynn and Arch Hill ' Ex-j Servicemen's Club, was held on Monday evening, when flag 500 was played. The ladies' committee responsible were: Mesdames Cossev, Holdswortli, O'Sullivan, Taylor, Boyd, Torrens and Henderson, of which Mrs. Sarney was unavoidably absent owing- to sickness. t . a Arrangements for the Poppy Day collection were made last evening at the meeting of the Birkenhead Women's Association. The president, Mrs. A. E. Wood, occupied the chair, and appealed for donations of old clothes, clean old rags for use in cases of sickness, and stated that a collection box would 'be placed at the door during the association's meetings for donations towards the relief fund. The members were reminded of the resolution urging their attendance at the householders' meeting on April 24, in support of women candidates for the- school committee.

A meeting of the Women's Christian Temperance Union was held in the Methodist' schoolroom on Tuesday, when those present included a contingent from Birkenhead. Dr. Craig gave the address, and stressed that all church women should join. She also explained the great advantages women have now and urged them to use these for the home, and the world. Some recitations and original songs were also given by Dr. Craig. Afternoon tea was served and a trail of pennies given.

A bridge party was given yesterdayafternoon at the Lyceum. Club by Mrs. F. H. Cliisholm for her sister, Lady Braddon, who arrived by the Monterey on a visit to New Zealand. The clubhouse of the West End Lawn Tennis Club presented' a gay scene on Wednesday, last when the ladies of the club held their At Home. Many friends and visitors from other clubs were entertained and spent a very enjoyable afternoon. ..The afternoon took the form of a "Yankee Tournament," the prize winners be.insr Mrs. Redwood (West End), Mrs. Marshall (Hallvburton Johnstone), and Mrs. Callinan (West End). Thirty-three weekly visits were paid to the hospital, 400 magazines and'9oo comic papers beins? distributed, A presentation of a handbag was made to Miss Kathleen Aickin; who has' been honorary secretary of .the srirls' committee for the past six years. The chairman, upon making the presentation, thanked Miss Aickin for the wonderful interest shown and the practical work she had done for the league.
