DEVONPORT WELFARE.
ASSOCIATION'S FINE WORK.
The annual general meeting of the Devonport Welfare Association was held on Tuesday in the Borough Council Chambers. The Mayor, Mr. H. F. W. Meikle, presided. The Mayor eaid the scope of work had extended beyond all expectation. The people of Devonport had shown such a commendable spirit that the borough was able to help its own needy cases. The association was the only public welfare organisation in Devonport, and overlapping was eliminated. Mr. T. P. Gilfedder, hon. secretary, presented a comprehensive report on the association's activities. Over six acrcs v/ere now under vegetable cultivation. Last year's crops, if marketed, would have realised £188. Manures and seeds had cost £21. This year 154,000 plants would be available for free distribution. About 150 tons of firewood was being stocked, and 1400 pairs of boots had been mended. Concessions in new boots, clothes, meat, j bread and ferry tickets had been obtained. The depot had been open on five days per week, and on Saturdays till noon. Voluntary helpers enabled this to be done. A staff of 20 lady assistants attended weekly, and a sewing guild, under the charge of I the Mayoress, worked three machines. The following executive was elected: President, the Mayor, Mr. H. P. W. Meikle; vice-presidents, Messrs. A. G. Lunn and C. M. Browne, Mrs. A. C. Hearn, Messrs. R. Wilson, G. W. McCarthy, A. W. Webster, Captain N. E. Bicknell and Mr. T. P. Gilfedder (secretary); general committee, Rev. Father Furlong, Rev. Lawson Marsh, Rev. R. B. Davison, Rev. W. E. Lush, Mesdames J. Clark-Walker, A. Burnett, J. Percival. E. Woodward, Messrs. A. R. Bearsley, E. O. Covers, J. P. Wright.
