MEDICAL SERVICES.
'DR. STEWART'S APPOINTMENT.
The appointment of- Dr. J. Garfield Stewart, M.8., Ch.B., of Takapuna, as ■surgeon and agent to the Devonport Naval Base, is announced by the Naval Board in Wellington. Dr.. Stewart, who had a distinguished war record,'holds also, the appointment of surgeon to the No. 1 Artillery Co-operation-Squadron, and has the distinction of being the only medical officer associated with the Territorial • Forces who is also a flying officer. Between 1914 and 1916 he served as adjutant of the New Zealand divisional train on GalMpoli and in France, and for the remaining period of the war he was attached, with the . rank of captain, to the Royal Air Force, with which he had considerable flying experience in artillery co-operation and infantry _ control duties. The. award of the Military Cross was conferred on him. Born in Dunedin, Dr. Stewart is a member of one of the pioneering families, of that province. He was educated at Timaru'Boys' High School, Otago University and Otago Medical School, gradu--1 atin-f in 1924, after resuming the medical studies his war services had interrupted. Before entering private practice, Dr. Stewart was a member of the resident staffs of the Dunedin, Wanga--end Wellington {Hospitals.
