LEMONS IN SHORT SUPPLY.

While values for apples continue low, there is a good demand for dessert pears. Persimmons are not meeting with much inquiry, but supplies of lemons have been short, and really good fruit sells well. Only small quantities of tomatoes are now being sent up from the Hutt, with the result that higher prices ruled. Considerably more quinces are coming to hand, and sales had to be made at lower rates. Repacked bananas are in keen demand, and sales were made at high figures. Te Kauwhata grapes were not in heavy supply this week, and prices firmeu slightly. Oranges and passion fruit are in fair demand. Quotations are:—Apples: Delicious, 1/6 to 4/ per case; Spys, 2/ to 5/; Ballarats, 3/ to 4/; Munroes, 2/6 to 3/6; Jonathan, 3/ to 5/. Cape gooseberries: 2%d to 3V&d per lb. Oranges: Fiji, 12/ to 14/ case; Karotongan, 20/ to 25/; Californiari, 38/ to 40/. Mushrooms, 5/ to 9/ benzine tin. Lemons: 8/ to 15/ case. Tomatoes: Extra choice, smooth, 6/ to 7/6; No. 2 and others, 2/6 to 4/. Tree tomatoes: 4/. Quinces: 6/ to 8/. Grapes: Te Kauwhata, 5/6 to 8/6 case; hothouse, Colman, 9d to 1/3; Hamburghs, 6d to 9d. Very heavy supplies of cauliflower were sent in from Ohakune this week, but the quality was not so good as usual. Cabbages were in fair supply, and large quantities of lettuce came to hand. Of the latter vegetable good quality met with fair demand. The market is still glutted with pumpkin and kumaras, and very large quantities of potatoes were sent in. Good autumn potatoes sold fairly well, but other lines were hard to quit. Celery is in good supply, and meets with fair demand. Quotations are:—Potatoes, 1/ to 3/3 per bag; swedes, 1/ to .2/6 bag; onions, 1/6 to 2/6 bag; kumaras, 1/6 to 2/6 bag; cabbages, 3/ to 6/ sack; cabbages, on benches, 2/ to 3/6 per dozen; cauliflowers, 3/ to 6/ nack; cauliflowers, on benches, 2/ to 4/ dozen; pumpkins, Crown, 5/ to 6/ cwt; others, 1/ to 3/ sack ; cucumbers, 1/6 to 4/6 dozen; carrots, 6d to 9d dozen; parsnips, 8d to 1/ dozen; beet, 6d dozen; turnips, 3d to 6d dozen: radish, 6d dozen; spring onions, 2d to 6d bundle; spinach, 6d to 9d dozen; leeks. Poultry. At to-day's auctions the supply of poultry was fairly heavy, and the demand was poor. The pt-ices paid remain about level. Selling rates were as follow:— Cockerels: Heavy breeds, prime, 2/ to 3/6 each; not prime, 1/ upwards; light breeds, prime, 1/6 to 2/; not prime, 6d upwards. Fat roosters: Heavy breeds, prime, 1/3 to 1/9; light breeds, 9d to 1/3; Fat hens: Heavy breeds, 1/3 to 1/9; light breeds, 9d to 1/3. Pullets: Heavy breeds, best, 3/ to 5/; smaller, 1/ upwards: light breeds, best, 3/ to 5/; smaller, 1/ upwards. Drakes: Young, prime, 1/3 to 1/9; smaller, 1/ upwards. Ducks: Young, 1/6 to 2/6; old, 1/ to 1/6. Drakes: Old, 1/ to 1/6. Geese: 3/ to 3/6. Turkey hens: 3/ to 5/. Gobblers: 5/ to 9/. Eggs and Butter. Demand for eggs has continued strong, with the result that prices have been maintained at the advance notified in last report. Quotations are:—First grade lien eggs, 1/11% per dozen; B grade, 1/8 Mj; C grade, 1/4%. First grade duck eggs, 1/9%; B grade, 1/7%; C grade, 1/4%. Farmers' butter, 6d to 8d per lb.
