"CREATING HARD WORK."
GOVERNMENT LEGISLATION.
"I think this is about the most complicated piece of business the council has yet encountered," said the Mayor, Mr. H. P. W. Meikle, at last night's meeting of the Devonport Borough Council. He was referring to a request from the Commissioner of Transport that the borough prepare a certified statement relative to proportionate expenditure on roads for the two years e.nded on March 31, 1932, to permit of an apportionment of heavy traffic license fees in No. 1A district. The Mayor added that in the preparation of the details, according to the instructions to be followed, the town clerk and his assistant would have a "merry time." "The Government," he commented, "appears to be doing nothing else but creating a lot of hard work for everybody." Mr. E. H. Little: Have you read the Sales Tax Act? The Mayor: That is impossible. (Laughter.) He suggested that the town clerk be given ample time to prepare the material, lie would need it. It was decided to §upply the information.
